"The major airline deals announced yesterday [Jan. 10, 2001] heighten fears that consolidation of the industry will erode the consumer benefits gained over two decades of deregulation. The proposed takeover of Trans World Airlines by American Airlines and the previously announced acquisition of US Airways by United Airlines would reduce the number of major airlines in the United States to five." (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER) This article contends that consumers may face higher air fares due to the limited number of available airlines.
