"As Northern Plains tribes reclaim their religious tradition, some spiritual leaders fear 21st century influences--such as treating sacred ceremonies as commercial enterprises, and mixing pipe spirituality with other beliefs--threatens its future. The very thing Indians are trying to revive, the thing that defines them, may be distorted out of recognition."
