"Tom Nguyen was 11 years old in 1980 when his family fled communist Vietnam and embarked on a treacherous voyage to the United States....Now 25 years after he left Vietnam, Nguyen, 36, finds himself back, living again in the country from which his family escaped. Not only is he back, but so is his new wife, Ngan No, 32, whose family left Vietnam under similar circumstances. The two are part of the three million Vietnamese scattered across the globe who are returning here to rediscover a country they once called home." (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH) The author discusses the "Viet Kieu, a name coined by locals for those Vietnamese who left the country and continue to live abroad. Hundreds of thousands, possibly millions are returning here annually to visit, although unlike Nguyen, most aren't staying permanently."
