"Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes mucus in the lungs to grow sticky and clog the airways. It also causes other organs to fail, and often leads to death before age 40. Of about 900 lung transplants performed annually in the United States, 120 to 150 are performed in people with cystic fibrosis, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a national support group that raises money for research." (NEWS & OBSERVER) This article describes cystic fibrosis and discusses the case of one patient and his efforts to get a lung transplant.
