Students learn about this basic need as they witness dozens of human shelters - igloos to mansion - from equator to pole and sea to mountaintop. They see how shelter protects families from the elements and must be adapted accordingly (i.e. in areas of heavy snowfall houses have a sloped roof), and how shelters are quite often built with materials that are locally available. Students also learn how shelter has evolved since caveman times when protection from enemies - both wild animals and human - were also important considerations. |
