"Since 1970 the world price of crude fuel has been both high and unstable. The price-setter, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), whose members include the United Arab Emigrates, Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela, has since 1980 followed a bumpy downward path that is unlikely to reverse itself in the foreseeable future." (HARVARD INTERNATIONAL REVIEW) The author attributes the oil shortages of the past three decades to the poor production strategy of the OPEC nations and cautions that the OPEC regime may not last much longer. |
