"A DRUG'S DARK SIDE" --- "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received reports of at least 66 suicides, another 55 suicide attempts and more than 1,300 cases of psychiatric problems among Accutane users. About half a million people a year use the drug to treat severe acne, according to Accutane maker Roche Laboratories." (BALTIMORE SUN) This article examines the potentially lethal side effects of this acne medication and provides a timeline of its history. |

"ACNE 'CURE' CARRIES A COST" --- "As Americans spend more and more time and money to try and banish blemishes, these is growing concern over use of the only medicine that can be considered a cure for acne--Accutane...Wider Accutane use is a problem for the U.S Food and Drug Administration--and a mixed blesing for the manufacturer, Roche Laboraties Inc., of Nutley, N.J.--because the drug can have dreadful side effects. It can cause birth defects and miscarriages in women who get pregnant while taking the drug. It has been linked to hepatitis, swelling in the brain, and acute pancreatitis. It may even trigger psychosis and compares its efficacy in treating pimples to that of antibiotics. |
