520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "Since September 11 [2001], the five culturally Islamic former Soviet republics of Central Asia--Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan--have emerged as important partners in the struggle against terrorism, despite records of serious human rights abuses. Yet in setting aside concerns about human rights generally, the United States is jeopardizing the support of a key group that could aid its antiterrorism efforts in these countries: women." (WORLD POLICY JOURNAL) The authors, focusing on Uzbekistan as their example, stress the importance of women's rights in helping improve overall security and stability in the former Soviet Central Asian republics.
