"Even if you're not familiar with the term 'sticky prices, you encounter them all the time. How many years has your newspaper sold for 50 cents a copy? No matter if interest rates are moving up or down, the price of your newspaper hardly ever changes--it's sticky. Economists take for granted that some prices are rigid, slow to shift even as supply and demand conditions might seem to warrant. For many economists, these 'nominal frictions' are enormously important, a core reason why monetary policy matters. For other economists, however, sticky prices are neither widespread nor meaningful in the slightest for public policy."
