"Compared to the world's total population, the number of refugees--people whom catastrophe has uprooted from their homes and who are residing in temporary shelters or wandering about--is small. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, of the 6.2 billion people on the planet, as of 2004 'only' some forty-two million are refugees. That's about one in every 148 persons. Of these, about twenty-five million, from at least fifty countries, are 'internally displaced,' meaning they have been forced to leave their homes but are still in their home country. About half of this number are in Africa." (WORLD & I) This article examines "the international refugee problem and how to handle it." |
