520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "Wear-and-tear injuries, once the bane of middle age, are visited increasingly upon the young, from middle school on. Basketball and soccer players are prone to ACL injuries, girls even more so than boys. Young baseball players damage their shoulders and elbows. Gymnasts injure their wrists. While health experts sound the alarm about childhood obesity, sports medicine authorities say 'overuse' injuries among young athletes are increasing at an alarming rate. One expert has called the situation an epidemic." (KANSAS CITY STAR) The author examines the increase in children's athletic injuries and cites factors behind this increase. Tips for playing safely are provided.
