"At the International Conference on Finance for Development (FfD) held last month [March 2002] in Monterrey, Mexico, rich countries once again rejected new, invigorating options that would allow poor countries to stand on their own feet, in favour of empty offers of a little more aid. A set of conditions have already been announced by US President George W Bush for countries to access US aid." (DOWN TO EARTH) The authors "analyse the politics of aid, and conclude that developing countries should put down their begging bowls. Instead, they should demand fair trade and a system of global taxation to fund development.".
