"Since 1999, the people-smuggling business has grown in sophistication and scale, with unprecedented numbers of Afghans, Iranians, Iraqis and other Middle Eastern people risking their lives to head toward Australia....Australia's harshness in detaining asylum seekers under grueling conditions, and seemingly delaying the interview process by which their status as refugees could be determined, has added to the gravity of the problem." (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST) The author addresses problems faced by the increasing number of refugees to "rich resettlement countries" that are "increasingly closing their doors to new populations of people from different cultures and religions.".
