"As estimated 5 million to 6 million U.S. children are currently taking at least one psychiatric drug. Doctors agree that these drugs bring much-needed help to kids with severe problems, but there is continuing debate over whether drugs are being overprescribed to treat inappropriate cases or to pacify children who are simply badly behaved. With side effects ranging from sedation to tics, and long-term effects on kids' brains still unknown, 'cautious and careful assessments' are a must, says Tom Kobylshi, professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University." (USA TODAY) This article focuses on the need for parents to understand the side effects of having their children take drugs for ADHD.
