"Torture has been used since the dawn of civilization. It served several purposes: a form of punishment, a method to extract confessions or a form of execution. The use of torture was used extensively in certain times including the Roman Empire, the Witch Hunts (1300s-1600s) and the Spanish Inquisition. These periods are remembered for their cruelty. The victims of torture have represented a wide variety of classes and cultures. And the torturers were often disturbingly innovative with their methods." (HISTORY MAGAZINE) The author describes various methods of torture used throughout history.
