Led by Bachchni Devi, a woman who had organized movements to protect the forest from logging 30 years before, the group now faced a tougher challenge; the Power Grid Corporation of India. The Corporation wanted to install a dam and had hired contractors to remove the very trees that had been physically protected (through literal tree hugging) by groups of women in nonviolent civil disobedience during the protest's early days in the 1970s. Devi said then, 'We did not protect these trees so many years ago, only to see them cut now!'"
