Of the 90 divisions with which the United States army fought World War II, the all-draftee 88th Infantry--the Blue Devils--was activated to duty in 1943 in only 16 months, a record unmatched in World War II. The division's readiness was proven not by speed of training, however, but in combat. Once again, the American citizen-soldier showed himself to be more than a match for his enemies.
