"Inside patient homes...hospice care looks much like it did three decades ago when the concept started as a small philanthropic enterprise run by volunteers comforting those dying from cancer. Today [2003] hospice is a thriving, mature industry of corporate-like entities that aggressively recruit patients, throw lavish fund-raising events and pay executives six-figure salaries. Nearly 25 percent of the 3,200 U.S. hospices are for-profit, and a few even trade on Wall Street. Just like the rest of the health care profession, hospice has evolved into big business." (PALM BEACH POST) This article chronicles how a "caring endeavor that started with volunteers" has evolved into a competitive industry.
