"Hurricanes were the big story of the year [2004]. The onslaught of storms that slammed into Florida and affected much of the Southeast resulted in the costliest hurricane season on record. For the first time since 1886, four hurricanes hit a single state, with two of the storms ranking as the second and third costliest storms on record. The hurricanes and tropical storms also helped to boost the annual tornado count to over 1,700 for the first time on record."
