Next came the first human occupiers, the Guanches. Then came the conquerors, the Europeans, who used the islands as stepping stones for more distant exploration, while also colonizing the archipelago. Finally, modern-day travelers such as myself constitute a fourth wave of invasion--people who each year descend upon the islands in the millions via daily flights, ships, and ferries."
